There it sits... way out on Black's Point... all alone... shrouded in fog and mystery... just as it has done for many years.
Several tall spires reach up towards the sky... grim reminders of a time when it was once called Black's Folly... now it is just another reminder of ruined dreams.
That was when Mr. Black had decided to build himself a small castle out on what was then known simply as The Point... a narrow neck of barren land, just over a kilometre long, stretching out into the sea.
And when he started building... with such big plans... that's when The Point became known as 'Black's Folly.'
No one believed it was possible to build such a grand structure on what they had always thought of as... just a rock.
No one seems to have known Black's first name... he was simply known as Mr. Black... though nobody really knew much about him.
He was a strange man... kept to himself... was hardly ever seen in town... not even in a grocery store.
His building supplies were all ordered by a written list... delivered by one of his employees... and the bill paid with cash on delivery.
It was said he was doing at least some of the work himself... with the help of several hired labourers... who claimed they never saw their employer... and received their daily instructions on paper every morning.
Black, meanwhile, preferred to work during the night... alone and uninterrupted.
One unusual feature of the place was a circular balcony... about twenty feet below the top of the tallest spire.
It was rumoured that he went out on that narrow balcony to walk... round and round every night... in all kinds of weather.
The exterior of the place was nearly finished, just in time for Halloween... when it was hit by a storm... bringing the strongest wind gusts to hit the area in a century.
A storm surge produced waves of heights unheard of before... battering the unfinished castle... destroying some sections... and washing a good part of it out to sea.
As for Mr. Black... as far as anyone knows, he was never seen again... presumably washed out to sea with some part of his castle.
Some said that Black was involved with a young woman... for whom he was building the castle... until she refused to live on a rock in the ocean... which caused him to go mad and jump from the balcony.
Others claimed that Black had been a mad scientist... that things had gotten out of hand... that he had angered the Gods of all things natural...and the storm had been nature's way of punishment... and of stopping him.
Funny, how some people can attribute the worst scenarios... to something that could have been perfectly ordinary.
On the night of the storm, he could have been swept off his feet... or he might have simply gone mad and jumped.
To the best of anyone's knowledge the ruined castle is deserted... no sign of life has been observed out there for many years... not since the storm.
Following that incident... as frequently happens in such cases... Black's Point - like other deserted places - became a source of stories and speculation.
