Forrest Green and his twin sister Willow live on a large farm about a mile outside of town... which they inherited from their parents some years ago. It is just the two of them, for neither of them ever married... and they remained living in the house they had grown up in. He looks after the outside work and she takes care of the inside.
Rumours say that nothing inside the house has changed since the first Greens built the place nearly 200 years ago. No one knows if that's true since not one person - except the Greens - has been inside the house for many years. The exterior is a dull, weather-beaten grey... with a few pieces of newer board here and there, indicating that rotten wood has been replaced at some point.
Forrest and Willow are never seen in town unless they need something they can't grow, hunt, or make at home. They keep to themselves and seem quite content with things the way they are. And the people in town don't see any reason to interfere with that arrangement.
For many years, several generations of the Green family have grown pumpkins... fields and fields of them... which they harvest and sell in the fall. Every year these fields are filled with orange blobs of all sizes... and that highlights the one thing that Forrest and Willow disagree on... or so the story goes.
Apparently, Forrest hates Halloween - and pumpkins - with a passion. He would replace the pumpkins with another crop in a heartbeat... in fact he tried it once and planted zucchini instead. That was a total failure... nobody came to buy any. Forrest and Willow ate a lot of zucchini that winter... and he went back to growing pumpkins again the next year. But he was far from happy about it.
Willow, on the other hand... seems to love Halloween. Every year she stocks up on candy and other treats... not because they get any trick-or-treaters... but it gives her an excuse to indulge her love of sweets. She is always hopeful that someone will come but... sadly, not one trick-or-treater has ever come to their door. Of course, the fact that they live outside town might have something to do with that... but there's more to it than meets the eye.
Since Willow doesn't spend much time outside... she has no idea that Forrest is the reason they don't see any trick-or-treaters. You see, Forrest has some rather strange ideas when it comes to decorating. When people have finished buying the pumpkins they want, Forrest secretly checks out the ones left over... chooses the five ugliest ones among them... and proceeds to carve strange, deformed faces on them. He then nails a board on top of the double gates at the end of their driveway and sets the pumpkins on top.
