The meek shall inherit the earth

We’re at that time of the year when people of the most reputable character, who would never think of being dishonest think nothing of trying to defraud the tax man.

It brings to mind a story I heard a few years ago.

This lady who was the pastor of a church in a very well-to-do area of the city. She enjoyed her vocation until she discovered she could earn a lot more money helping the rich cheat on their taxes.

She was earning a six-figure income and one of her clients was a supreme court judge. This went on for several years until the IRS hauled both of them into court.

The lady pleaded mental incompetence and got off, the poor judge was fined half a million bucks and never recovered from the humiliation.

As the darling of the rich and powerful sat in her living room cogitating how she was going to earn a living, she thought, “Well I could go back to being a pastor.”

As for our supreme court judge, the last I heard he has taken a pilgrimage to Rome joined a monastic order of monks and became very devout.

So much for trying to defraud the IRS.
