The Soft Spot

There’s a soft spot in the skull.
Be warned.

She’s already all
of a person
except for that one spot
in the head,
a space between the bones
that don’t quite protect
the brain she’ll need
to understand
what she already feels.

You hold her carefully,
so nothing encroaches
on her flaw.

It’s a fontanel
and will close up in time.
Until then,
you close up around her.
