The Loss of Two Police Officers

A raid, a task, a lawful quest,
Constable Pinizzotto, put to the test.

In North York, a warrant served,
A life taken, suddenly unnerved.

Two days before, in Hearst’s far reach,
Constable Bali, lessons to teach.

A vehicle struck, an active chase,
Loss upon loss, in time and space.

Not isolated, these twin pains,
But a stark truth, that swiftly rains.

The thin, thin line, so clear to see,
Between duty’s call, and tragedy.

Routine steps, a common day,
Can twist and turn, and lead astray.

A simple stop, a call to heed,
Can sow a dangerous, fatal seed.

For Bali young, and Pinizzotto’s years,
A husband, father, calming fears.

Their work, their lives, forever stilled,
By violence, suddenly instilled.

The state’s strong hand, its lawful might,
Attacked when bullets take the night.

When powers met with angry lead,
The price is paid, with lives instead.

Neighbors, witnesses, all in fear,
When shots ring out, and danger’s near.

A family’s grief, a service’s ache,
For those who serve, and lives they take.

The trust we place, the rules we make,
Can shatter fast, for goodness’ sake.

The ordinary, the everyday,
Can swiftly turn to fatal fray.

A gap so wide, a fearful space,
Between enforcement, and death’s grim face.

The trigger pulled, the deed is done,
No turning back, when life is gone.
