To his surprise, he was standing on a rainbow star. Looking down, he saw that the colors bathed his legs. There seemed to be a million sparkling colors. He noticed several animals on the colorful rainbow as well. Could it be? It’s the Rainbow Bridge I’ve heard so much about! When pets are gone, they cross the Rainbow Bridge and wait for their owners in a place where they are happy. As Roy watched, dogs rolled in the colors, and cats batted at the color green with their paws. There were pet birds, gerbils, hamsters, and snakes looking blue, red, and purple in the rainbow’s colors.
He remembered his mother’s large cat, Mr. Butterscotch. If only he could find him. Suddenly, he felt a soft pressure on his ankle. It was Mr. Butterscotch! He picked up the cat and hugged him, stroking his silky orange fur. If only his mother could be here now. She had been so sad when Mr. Butterscotch was gone. Roy was sorry she hadn’t been able to come with him. He decided he’d do his best to bring his mom to the Rainbow Bridge Star where they’d spend the night playing with the pets.
Roy hoped he could cheer his mother up. Maybe she’d try again tonight.
Upon returning home before dawn, Roy ran to his mother’s bedroom to tell her about Mr. Butterscotch. He stopped in his tracks. There was stardust in her hair and on her face. Mom had found the stars! He wondered what she had seen?
Waking her, he asked, “Mom! You went to the stars! Which star did you go to?”
“Yes, after you went, I tried and tried because I wanted to visit the stars. I listened to the music over and over. It worked! I went to the Star of Memories. Oh, Roy! The music was so lovely. The star had every memory of my sister, Sherrie, from when we were small and as we grew up. I remembered our favorite toys and games like jacks and checkers. Sherrie always picked the best places for hide and seek. Our uncle often took us to the pink and white ice cream shop where I loved my hot fudge sundaes!” She smiled.
Roy jumped up and down on her bed. “Mom, I have a surprise star for you tonight. Just wait!”
